Like a lot of things “Hot Wheels”, there is plenty of incorrect information floating around. This short article will answer the question: Why do Hot Wheels Blisters Turn Yellow?

Two Typical Assumptions

There are three often mentioned causes to explain Hot Wheels Blisters Turning Yellow.

1 – Exposure to the sun.
2 – Smoke damage.
3 – Exposure to heat.

While the three explanations above may lead to yellowing, none of them were the root cause of the issue.

The REAL Reason Hot Wheels Blisters Turn Yellow

It’s the material. Mattel, along with many other manufacturers, received “bad plastic” in the 1990s. “Bad plastic” is typically lower quality plastic that lacks the anti-yellowing agents/stabilizers which higher quality plastic has. This is usually an attempt at cost cutting. The bad plastic is what caused the blisters to turn yellow and often made them difficult to see through. Some blisters even turned dark yellow. The yellowing problem is prevalent in releases from the late 1990s thru the early 2000s. Most of the yellowing from this range seems to appears in releases manufactured in China.

What Can I Do To Stop My Hot Wheels From Yellowing?

The very short and simple answer is absolutely nothing. It doesn’t matter how or where you store them. The yellowing can’t be prevented. There isn’t anything that can be done to clean them either. If the bad plastic was used, it’s inevitable. Well, I guess there is one thing that you can do… If you open them, there isn’t anything left to worry about.

Introduction

Hot Wheels, those iconic miniature cars that have been a staple in toy boxes for decades, have evolved beyond mere playthings. They’ve transformed into coveted collectibles, with some models fetching astonishing prices. In this post, we’ll explore the world of Hot Wheels and unveil the our picks for the Top 10 Most Valuable Hot Wheels that have captured the hearts of collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.

Factors That Determine Value

The value of a Hot Wheels is a complex equation involving rarity, condition, packaging, and more. Limited production runs, collaborations with renowned brands, and unique features can significantly elevate a Hot Wheel’s worth. Whether it’s the year of manufacture or the intricacies of its design, each factor plays a role in shaping its value.

The Top 10 Most Valuable Hot Wheels

1969 Pink Rear-Loading Beach Bomb:

Although it was never a production release, the 1969, the Pink Rear-Loading Beach Bomb prototype is a Holy Grail for collectors. Its rarity lies in its unusual design featuring surfboards that were meant to be loaded through the rear window. Only a few prototypes exist, making it a sought-after gem. 42 or so in various colors, but only 2 in pink.

1971 Purple Olds 442:

With its vibrant purple exterior, the 1971 Purple Olds 442 is a favorite among collectors. The Olds 442 is a popular car typically due to the quality of the casting and low release numbers but what sets the purple Olds 442 apart is its rarity. A very limited number of purple cars were made.

1968 Orange Custom Mustang:

The 1968 Custom Mustang was released produced in both the US factory and the Hong Kong factory. Like most redlines, clear windows were on US releases while blue tinted windows were on the Hong Kong releases. US or Hong Kong, an Orange Custom Mustang is a tough one to find!

1969 Brown Custom Charger:

Known for its unique brown color, the 1969 Brown Custom Charger is cherished by collectors who appreciate its distinctive hue and limited production numbers. Brown isn’t usually a very popular color but factor in that only 3 are known to exist and you see why it’s on our list. To the untrained eye, it’s easy to mistake a toned orange Custom Charger as a brown.

1970 Red Baron with White Interior:

The 1970 Red Baron with a white interior is a prime example of how a small detail can elevate a Hot Wheel’s value. This variation is exceptionally rare, making it a prized possession among collectors. Collectors beware: this release is easily faked using a reproduction interior. As with all collectible items, be sure to buy from trusted and reputable sellers/sources.

1968 Antifreeze Over Chrome Camaro:

The 1968 Over Chrome Camaro, with its shiny chrome finish and antifreeze Spectraflame paint, is a quintessential example of the early Hot Wheels. Its limited availability and the allure of its reflective exterior contribute to its high value.

1970 Ed Shaver Custom AMX:

A creation due to Mattel sponsoring drag racer Ed Shaver, the 1970 Custom AMX is cherished not only for its rarity but also for its connection to the racing world. Collectors value its historical significance and unique design. This was released in the U.K.

1968 Beatnik Bandit (Hot Pink Color)

The 1968 Beatnik Bandit in a stunning hot pink was a US casting/release. Its eye-catching appearance and rarity have solidified its status as a valuable collectible. US Beatnik Bandits were released in many more colors then the Hong Kong releases.

1969 “Cheetah” Base Python (Hong Kong):

This variant of the 1969 Python, known as the “Cheetah” Base, was produced in Hong Kong. Its distinct base and limited availability in certain markets make it a hot commodity among collectors. Like many on this list, the “Cheetah” was only produced as a prototype. It is rumored that roughly 6 of these exist.

1995 Number 271 Funny Car:

Last but not least, the 1995 Number 271 Funny Car rounds off our list. This one is all about the card! Without the card, it’s just your run of the mill release. Here’s an article the we did on the 1995 Number 271 Funny Car.

Collector’s Tips and Insights

Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt has changed ‘guidelines’ throughout the years. Here’s a short guide that will help you identify a Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt.

1995 – The Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt Is Born

The Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt made it’s first appearance in 1995. One of the most popular Treasure Hunts was released at that time – the pearl white w/orange rally stripes ’67 Camaro. New to the hobby or not, I’d assume you already know about this one. 1995 Treasure Hunts were released with Real Rider wheels.
On the card, white text reading “TREA$URE HUNT SERIES” was centered on a green horizontal stripe A note also on the card indicated that they were limited to a run of 10,000 pieces. 12 cars were released in the series.

1996 Treasure Hunts

Not much changed in 1996 regarding Treasure Hunts. The cars all still wore Real Rider wheels but the limited release was upped from 10,000 pieces to 25,000 pieces. Like 1995, 12 cars were released in the series.

1997 Treasure Hunts – A Slight Change

1997 brought a change to the Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt series. All castings part of the 1997 series were released without Real Rider wheels. The card was changed a bit as well – the limited number of pieces was no longer displayed. Rumors are plenty but the quantity of each Treasure Hunt from 1997 on is unknown.

1998 – 1999 Treasure Hunts

Not much changed between 1998 – 1999. Green stripe on card. General happiness. Well, except for the fact the Real Riders were still missing…

2000 Treasure Hunts

The 2000 Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt series saw the return of Real Rider wheels on 11 out of 12 castings. Lakester (5/12) was the only one to have standard mainline wheels.

2001 Treasure Hunts – Some with Real Riders, Some Without.

2001 was similar to 2000 – it was a mixed release. Some Treasure Hunts (7) had Real Rider wheels while others (5) did not.

2002-2006 Treasure Hunts

The Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt didn’t change very much in these years. Real Riders ( for the most part). Green stripes.

2007 – 2011 Treasure Hunts – Here Comes The Tiered System

2007 saw the introduction of the tiered system. The Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt could now be found in two different styles – regular and super. Unlike the previous years, the regular, more basic Treasure Hunts DID NOT have Real Rider wheels. Aside from the green striped card, these cars appeared to be nothing any more special than a regular mainline release. Limited production is assumed and by still being part of the Treasure Hunt series, they were difficult to find.

Aside from the regular Treasure Hunts, Super Treasure Hunts were also found. The Super Treasure Hunts were similar in paint scheme to their regular versions but instead of standard paint, the Supers wore Spectraflame paint. Supers wore Real Rider wheels. The $ sign was used one the card to denote Super Treasure Hunts. Some cards read “TREA$URE HUNT”, “T-HUNT”, or “T-HUNT$”. This tiered system ran unchanged from 2007 – 2011.

2012 Treasure Hunts – SSSHHHHHHH, It’s Super Secret

2012 saw the introduction of what is referred to as ‘Super Secret Treasure Hunts’. While the regular hunts remained unchanged on green stripe cards, the Super Treasure Hunts were released into the mainline on non-specific cards. Standard nonTreasure Hunt releases were found as well. Aside from the card change, Super Secret Treasure Hunts remained the same.

2013 Treasure Hunts – The End of the Green Stripe

2013 saw the end of the green stripe Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt card. Now both regular Treasure Hunts and Super Treasure Hunts were released on unmarked cards. The only thing that signified a regular Treasure Hunt as such was a small flame logo that was found on the car. This lead to a lot of confusion between what is and what isn’t a regular Treasure Hunt.

It seemed that the Combat Medic caused the most confusion in 2013. The casting wears the flame symbol as part of another graphic. Regular Treasure Hunts had the flame separate from any other graphic. Castings prior to 2013 wearing the flame logo ARE NOT TREASURE HUNTS! On US cards, a logo and text can be found behind the car on the card that states “This symbol on the vehicle let’s you know it is hard to find and highly collectable.”. As a note, collectible was spelled incorrectly on all releases.

2014 thru 2023 Treasure Hunts

Not much changed between 2014 and 2023. The same type of system that was used in 2013 applied to this span.

I’m sure we are part of many of the same social media groups and forums dedicated to our hobby. Lately, it seems that there has been a rather LARGE increase in misinformation regarding the date on the bottom of Hot Wheels. Some think that it’s the year the casting was produced. Others believe that it’s the year the copyright for the design was awarded. Let’s take a quick look and assign a proper answer to this often asked question.

Is It The Manufacturing Date?

The short and sweet answer is no. It is not the manufacturing date. If it were the manufacturing date, Hot Wheels would have to modify the tool every year that the casting was released and this does not happen.

How Do I Know When My Car Was Made?

From 2008 on, Hot Wheels has introduced a system that we refer to as the ‘Base Code’. This is a 3 digit code that is found on the base of your car. The first character is a letter that represents the year of manufacture. The second and third characters are numbers which represent which week of the year the car was manufactured.

A List of Hot Wheels Base Codes

A = 2008

B = 2009

C = 2010

D = 2011

E = 2012

F = 2013

G = 2014

H = 2015

J = 2016

K = 2017

L = 2018

M = 2019

N = 2020

P = 2021

R = 2022

S = 2023

For example, if you have a base code that reads ‘D35’, that is a casting that was made the 35th week of 2011. A base code reading ‘G42’ is a casting that was made the 42nd week of 2014. Pretty easy to remember.

So What Does The Year On The Base of Hot Wheels Mean Then?

This date is actually the copyright date. It is the year that the design was registered. 9 times out of 10, the first release of the design is 1 year after the copyright date. Again, please don’t interpret the date as the date of manufacture – that’s not what it is. For example, look at the base of this Volkswagen T1 Panel Bus:

The copyright date of the design is 2011 while the base code reads ‘F28’ – the 28th week of 2013. Castings released after 2008 are much easier to identify as compared to earlier releases.

Here’s another example of 2 recent releases. Both of these ’16 Dodge Charger SRTs show 2015 as the copyright date but the red one has a base code of ‘H42’ while the blue release shows ‘J32’.

If you have a question about a casting, feel free to ask.

Do you own the RARE Hot Wheels 271 Funny Car? It seems that a few times each year the Hot Wheels 271 Funny Car pops up and becomes the hot topic for a short while. Chances are very, VERY slim that the carded Funny Car you have in your collection is a carded #271. Below I’ll discuss what makes this car rare and how you can tell them apart.

It’s ALL About The Card

The first and most important point that I must make regarding the Hot Wheels 271 Funny Car is that the #271 card is where ALL of the value lies. It’s 100% about the card and not one bit about the car. I can’t stress this point enough. The car itself was released carded on the #271 card as ‘Funny Car’ (1994) and on the #277 card as ‘Side-Splitter’ (1995). It was also used in playsets. Once removed from the package, they are identical.

How Many 271’s Are There?

It is not known exactly how many 271 cards were produced but from what I’ve gathered, there are a few numbers floating around. It is thought that anywhere between 12 to 288 were produced. A list has been started and only between 10 to 20 carded 271 Hot Wheels Funny Cars have been validated and located.

It’s Not The Right Color And Has The Wrong Wheels

A lot of people that believe they have a loose #271 have the darker blue car with 5-spoke wheels. It’s not correct. The real 271’s were a lighter shade of blue and had basic (BW) wheels. Even if your car matches this description, if it’s loose it’s nothing more than a regular car.

But… Mine Is From 1977

Oh, one more thing to note. I see a lot of people dating this release of the Funny Car/Side-Splitter as a 1977 release. This is not fact either. The casting copyright was granted in 1977 and pertains to the base only. It’s a little strange as the copyright usually pertains to the entire design and not just the base. The Firebird Funny Car, Pepsi Challenger, Probe, Side-Splitter, and Vetty Funny all used this same base. 1977 was on the base every year this casting was produced. To learn more about these dates on the base of your Hot Wheels, click here for another article I wrote specifically on the subject.

In earlier times, if you would have told me that I was ADDICTED TO HOT WHEELS, I would have simply laughed at you.

I was shooting pictures last night and I came up with the idea for an image. This image holds a lot of meaning to me as it really put me in place regarding collecting. This image will be professionally printed and matted and will live alongside my collector cases. First the image, then my story. Fair warning – this will be a long read.

SFT $$$ IMAGE HERE

Growing up in the 1980s one of my fondest memories was playing with cars and trucks. I had the big Tonka and Nylint but my favorites were of the Hot Wheels and Matchbox variety. I don’t remember exactly what my first car was and I can say that for sure I no longer have it but if I were to guess I would have to say it was the red Hot Wheels Tricar X8 from 1983. Back in the day, I remember Hill Street Blues coming on the TV. As soon as I heard the theme song start, I ran to grab my Matchbox Plymouth Gran Fury Police Car – I just HAD to reenact that opening sequence. Every. Single. Time. If you don’t know, check it out -> Hill Street Blues Intro

The car picture above is not my original one, but a replacement I bought on eBay a few years ago in very similar condition as the one I cherished as a child.

Throughout the years, I put many many miles on my hundreds of cars that happily lived in a box. Mint condition was simply unheard of.

In the early 1990s, I began my ‘collection’ without knowing it. It consisted of a few assorted Johnny Lightning (Playing Mantis) era cars, a JL MOPAR set, and some Hot Rod cars. I was sick at that time and I remember my Mom bringing 2 Racing Champion Stock Rods home from Walgreens for me.

As the 90s went on, I got my drivers license. In the beginning all was good but my collecting was to begin spinning wildly out of control. I remember trips around 1996 to Toys R Us and Target to see if anything new was out. This was well before T-Hunted and The Lamley Group. I didn’t know of any other resources at that time except for dumb luck. That was probably a good thing.

I began collecting the castings I found ‘cool’. The criteria at that time was simple. Muscle car. Period. As long as I liked it, I bought it. I remember at one time buying over 30 Hot Wheels 1970 Dodge Charger Daytona’s. This was in 1996 and I don’t recall why I felt the urge to buy them. All of them.

1996 through 1999 was pretty much the same. I bought the castings I liked but then I had an idea and believe this is where the problem began. I remember thinking “why don’t I buy the castings that kids would play with? Since they open them all, I would keep these carded and have some valuable cars in the upcoming years.”. I bought as many of the ‘fantasy’ castings as I could.

In 2000, I got married. I remember at that time, Toys R Us sold Hot Wheels by the case. I started buying cases. The boundaries of my collecting habits were lifted. I was quite found of First Editions as well as series cars, but everything was fair game. I would no longer open a car regardless of what it was. I bought and bought and bought.

Collecting seemed to slow quite a bit when my son was born in 2002 and remained that way until 2004 or so. I was back to the same practice.

My youngest son was born in 2006. I can’t say I remember much about my ‘problem’ aside from the fact that I bought cars. A lot of them.

2010 was the worst year for me. Being a grown adult for quite a few years now, I found myself asking for Hot Wheels for my birthday. I spent countless hours on the HWC forums. I had a Walmart on the way to work and managed to stop a few times each week on the way. During lunch, I found myself running to Target which was ‘conveniently’ located just outside of the industrial park where I worked. On the way home, I was more than happy to stop at Kroger if my wife asked me to pick something up. They Had Hot Wheels! I found myself running to that same Walmart I was already at because I had a hunch that they just restocked. Treasure Hunts. Did I mention Treasure Hunts?!?!?!?!?!?!

Also in 2010, I bought my first 2 redlines at a local antique store – a blue Custom Cougar and a red TNT-Bird. What I did not know is this would eventually lead to the end of my problem.

Fast forward to 2013. That year brought some change to my family. We moved back home to our home state and I got a job paying VERY well. I was able to throw money at cars like it was nothing. $50 here. $200 there. My wife supports me in everything I do and my spending didn’t hurt the family budget one bit. It just didn’t matter.

When I bought my Superfine Turbine in June of 2014, I woke up. It was kind of like a reality and priority check all in one. There was no fun left in the hobby. It felt more like a stressful job or a chore if you will. All the enjoyment was gone. Long gone. I don’t know how to accurately describe the feeling. I felt that I HAD to buy these cars. I spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on these thousands of toys that live in carefully sorted boxes in the closet. I spent countless hours of my life chasing boxes and pallets. My cherished redlines live in acrylic cases on the wall. I was sitting at the same desk that I am sitting at now when it hit me…

What The Hell Did I Do???

My collecting habits changed drastically that day. I can honestly say that I no longer buy cars because I feel that I have to. I have moved into the world of customizing and have tightly focused what I collect – Ferrari’s and Supercar / race cars. I’ve gone from buying hundreds of cars per month to if I’m lucky, 5.

The ‘OTHER’ Golden Rule

When I see people boasting about how they ran to 7 different stores that night or that they bought 47 cars at K-Day and another 18 at Walmart on the way home, I cringe. I really do. I’ve been wanting to write something like this for quite some time now. If there is only one thing you take away from this, please take this. Collect only what you like and be sure to like what you collect. I call it The OTHER Golden Rule.

I’ve got a lot of this stuff. My intention is to make a large donation to the local Children’s Hospital. A simple little car can make such a big difference to a child that may not have a whole lot to look forward to on a given day.

Oh yeah before I forget – the value you ask? One hell of an expensive but VERY important life lesson…

Hot Wheels Addiction is REAL. A few years ago, the definition of ‘collecting’ changed for me. Quite drastically actually. I learned to enjoy the hobby for what it really is. I couldn’t be any happier! Recently, I detailed my collecting ‘problem’ in a previous article. At that time, I thought I knew first hand how out of control a person could get. The new generation of ‘collector’ is among us and to me their habits are terrifying. I’ve debated whether or not I should post this article along with the accompanying picture. Take it for what it is. Think of the following as a sort of public service announcement if you will.

Addiction By Definition

The word ‘addiction’ is derived from a Latin term for “enslaved by” or “bound to”.1 By definition For the sake of this article, let’s take a look at the definition of addiction. According to Wikipedia2, addiction is a state characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli, despite adverse consequences. The two properties that characterize all addictive stimuli are that they are reinforcing (i.e., they increase the likelihood that a person will seek repeated exposure to them) and intrinsically rewarding (i.e., something perceived as being positive or desirable).

What’s Going On?

I’ve been in this hobby for quite a few years now. I participate in many of the social media outlets and still hang around on a few forums. From time to time I still take a walk with my kids down the toy aisles and we still check out some of the dump bins. Some things are still the same from ‘back in the day’ but it seems like things for the most part have gotten worse. Why is that? What caused it?

Let’s Take A Step Back

Hunting for cars started in 1995 for me. For the most part, I remember hunting being fun. Aside from Treasure Hunts, the chances of finding just about anything you wanted on the pegs was very real. Heck, I didn’t learn about Treasure Hunts until the late 90s. The hours and miles put in were few and far between. I never bothered with newsgroups or websites. Ebay? Never heard of that either.

Today’s Collector

Group to group, forum to forum, I see quite a few of the same actions. Chasing from store to store, multiple times a day with hopes that SOMETHING NEW will be there. I’ve walked past my fair share of grown adults rampaging through dump bins. They reminded me like vultures trying to protect their kill. Don’t step too close, they may attack. And attack they do! I’ve witnessed many threats and heard various stories of fights over these toys. Claiming stores as if they are some sort of territory and warning others to stay away. It’s laughable really. Some of the posts that I have read I will not share simply due to the nature of the subject. I’ve pondered the toy addiction topic for quite some time and decided to do a little bit of research.

Hot Wheels Addiction – Is This You?

Although they may be down to the last few dollars in their account and it may not be in their best interest, they still head to the store to seek what might be there. A quick dash to the toy department and there it is. Bingo! Their weekly intel has paid off. A new dump bin in all it’s glory sitting on the sales floor just waiting to be cracked open. Without hesitation, case after case is cracked open. After a few minutes, the heartbeat returns to normal. Disappointment sets in after going through all the cases – no Super Treasure Hunt. On the other hand 6 regular hunts and 42 other cars (6 castings, 7 of each) have been placed neatly into the shopping cart. Not too bad of a haul. A quick jaunt around the store to pick up a thing or two for dinner. At the self checkout, they scan each car and gently place them into the bag. To eliminate the risk of damage, the food is bagged separate of course. Without much hesitation, the debit card is swiped but quickly declined. After another attempt, it is remembered that payday isn’t until Friday and it’s only Wednesday. A quick wave to the attendant brings him to the station. The food items are removed and the card is swiped again. The sale FINALLY goes through. Back at home, the new goods are marveled at and placed with the finds from the past few nights.

I’ve read quite a few posts where the events played out almost exactly as I described above. It truly scares me that the need to have these toys can come in the way of providing food or some of life’s other necessities for ones self. I’ve spoken up a few times but have been told to mind my own business and that the person could be doing worse things.

Don’t get me wrong. There isn’t a thing wrong with an adult buying and collecting toys but missing a meal or skipping a bill to obtain more toys? Read that sentence again. Listen to how absurd it sounds. This is the idea that I try to convey when issues like these come up. Maybe I shouldn’t care. Maybe I shouldn’t try to help. Toy addiction is a nasty thing.

Fear of Missing Out (FoMO)

The fear of missing out or FoMO is a relatively new term that I first heard a friend use last year. Maybe I was a bit behind – it was added to the Oxford Dictionary back in 2013. The phrase itself is pretty easily understood but I read up a bit on it. Although few would admit it, I believe that today’s collector experiences this. Enter social media…

I should note before going forward that it’s normal to feel this regret from time to time in life. While the fear of missing out is an old fear, the dependence on social media has taken it to a new extreme. FoMO is most common in people between the ages of 18-33. Think of how many people CONSTANTLY scan groups to see what’s hitting the pegs. Sure, some do this to keep up on the hobby but the others don’t just want to keep up. You know the whole “keeping up with the Jones’” thing. It’s that but they need to do better. The latter are the types of people that are then faced with a decision – ‘should I go check my store’? The clock has already started ticking and they are running out of time! They NEED to get to the store and they NEED to find what everyone else is finding. Their finds are posted and then off to the next store hoping that the next collector hasn’t been there yet. On an interesting tangent, studies show that the people most sensitive to FoMO are the ones who are always trying to get the best out of the situation. Is this where the recent onslaught of the perceived ‘rarity’ and ‘value’ of these items comes in to play? How can you buy a standard mainline car for 94 cents and within a matter of minutes expect others to pay $3 plus for it? Supply and demand, right? Sorry, I don’t buy it.

Behavioral addiction is a real and dangerous thing. So many are addicted and they don’t even know it. Even though the person knows that they don’t have the necessary funds or has other priorities, they just can’t help but buy that next car. ‘It’s only a dollar’. I’m pretty sure that we’ve all said that one before. After a few years, that saying leads to the accumulation of box after endless box. It hits home when you need that dollar the most.

How Are You Treating Your HOBBY?

Do you find yourself buying without reason?

Seeing people with new releases, do you find the desire to have them yourself?

When you look at your boxes or piles of cars, are you buying more than you can store?

Do you look at certain items and wonder ‘Why did I buy this?’?

Even though you know you are being taken advantage of, do you throw a premium at the newest items just to have them first?
